“Get the fuck outta here you fuckin’ faggot, or I’ll bust your

fuckin’ faggot face in!” Ashanti yelled at Adam.

“Yeah, get outta my sight. I never took you for a fuckin’

queer, Davis,” Dean said as he spat in Adam’s face.

Adam jerked awake. He looked around. The drone of the

jet’s engines and Brendan’s even breathing brought him back to

reality. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest as the

dream faded. He took a deep breath and turned to look at the

peacefully sleeping linebacker beside him, head lolling to one

side against the backrest. Adam took another deep breath.

They were on the plane headed for Hawaii and the Pro

Bowl with the NFC team, coaches and families of those players

who were married. The NFL provided chartered jets as some of

the players were so big-bodied that flying commercial—even in

first class—was not an option. The teams had met in Los

Angeles for the pre-flight briefing. Brendan had signed them up

to room together. This had caused Adam some anxiety as Dean

had remarked that the two seemed to have become pretty good

buds, hanging out and eating meals together.

Adam thought about the evening before at dinner. When

they were ordering their meals Brendan had suggested they

order two different entrées and share. The handsome young

waiter had smiled and said, “Gosh, two famous NFL players

doing just what my boyfriend and I do. I can’t wait to tell him. He

says only gay guys do that.”

Brendan had merely laughed at Adam when he brought

up these concerns: especially about rooming together. He

reminded Adam that, other than the married guys, most of the

single players or those who weren’t bringing family signed up

with a roommate. Adam agreed he was just being silly, but he

couldn’t shake the worries that had followed him since hearing

the report on bullying on the TV.

The other thought that plagued him was he hadn’t played

his best in the Divisional Championship game. They’d lost. Adam

couldn’t get beyond thinking that somehow he had

subconsciously blown the game so he could be with Brendan in

the Pro Bowl. After all, hadn’t Brendan confessed his relationship

with Adam had affected his performance in their playoff game?

Yes, Brendan had assured him that once the season was

over he would acquire free agent status; he would be picked up

by the Mustangs and they would play on the same team. But

Adam didn’t have Brendan’s bravado and optimism. Adam

wasn’t convinced that that could be accomplished so easily.

What then? How would they carry out this affair living in two

different cities, playing for two separate teams? The nature of

their relationship was sure to be discovered.

None of these things had seemed to matter so much the

night before in the hotel room. They had received the results of

their HIV tests: both were negative. Adam had been able to feel

the warm moistness of Brendan’s chute, skin-on-skin, for the first

time. At that moment nothing seemed to matter except that he

was intimately joined to this man, as intimately as any two men

could be, and he loved him more than ever.

And when Brendan came inside him and he felt the warm

fluids pulsing
